  • Combines the best of silicate technology with the versatility of modern paints.
  • Suitable for application over previously painted mineral substrates, including those coated with traditional acrylic

Mineral paints have been one of the most durable solutions for protecting and decorating façades for decades. However, technological advances have led to a new generation of coatings: sol-silicate paints, which combine the traditional benefits of silicates with greater application versatility.

Ovaldine sol silicato incorporates two types of mineral binders:

  • Potassium silicate.
  • Silica sol: Silica sol is an aqueous dispersion of extremely small and stable silicon dioxide (SiO₂) nanoparticles that help form a three-dimensional mineral network as the paint dries.

The combination of these two components makes it possible to develop coatings that retain the mineral properties of traditional silicates while significantly expanding compatibility with previously painted mineral substrates.

Sol-silicate paints stand out for offering:

  • High resistance to rain, UV radiation, and extreme temperatures
  • Excellent resistance to alkaline conditions and aggressive agents
  • High breathability, helping to prevent moisture-related problems

What is the difference between silicate and sol-silicate paints?

The main difference lies in the substrates they can be applied to.

Traditional silicate paints use potassium silicate as their main binder. This compound reacts chemically with mineral substrates through a silicification process, forming an extremely stable and durable bond. These coatings are suitable for mineral substrates but cannot be used on façades that already have a layer of emulsion paint.

Ovaldine sol silicato, on the other hand, does not rely exclusively on silicification for adhesion. The silica nanoparticles form a highly cohesive mineral network, allowing it to adhere both to bare mineral surfaces and to substrates that have previously been painted with organic paints.

What advantages does it offer over traditional silicate paint?

Greater compatibility with different substrates: Sol-silicate paint can be applied to mineral substrates as well as existing coatings.

Easier application: it provides smoother, more uniform application, reducing common issues associated with traditional silicate paint.

Reduced splashing: it makes the applicator’s job easier and keeps the work area cleaner during application.

Greater resistance to liquid water while maintaining breathability: it prevents water from penetrating the substrate while still allowing water vapour to pass through, so the substrate can breathe.

Can sol-silicate paint be applied over acrylic paint?

Yes! One of the main advantages of sol-silicate paint is precisely its ability to adhere to previously painted surfaces.

In many renovation projects, façades feature a combination of different materials: original mineral areas, sections coated with old acrylic paints, or small repairs carried out using other materials.

When is it advisable to use a sol-silicate paint?

Each project requires a specific assessment, but in general, it is particularly recommended for:

  • Restoration and conservation of historic buildings
  • Mixed substrates
  • Building renovation projects
  • Humid climates
  • Applications where high breathability is required

Should sol-silicate paint always be used whenever possible?

Not necessarily. Although sol-silicate paints offer some very interesting advantages for certain projects, that does not mean they are the right choice for every situation.

In conventional homes, standard new-build projects or applications where there are no specific requirements for breathability, substrate compatibility or renovation, a high-quality façade coating remains a highly recommended solution.

Today’s façade coatings offer excellent coverage, washability and durability, together with a wide variety of finishes.

The key is not to look for a single solution for every application, but to select the product that best suits each specific need. Sol-silicate paint expands the range of options available and offers clear advantages in certain situations, but façade paints remain an essential tool in any painting project.
